Francisco Toledo

Bio

Francisco Toledo was an artist of prodigious gift: a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and ceramicist. Toledo’s oeuvre combines diverse materials and practices, and often included the use of non-traditional supports such as mica, fossils, and turtle shells. Toledo’s combination of diverse materials and art making practices reflects a world-view unbounded by category or hierarchy. Solo-exhibitions include: XLVII Venice Biennale; Reina Sofía Museum, Madrid; and Museo de Arte Moderno, México City, México.

Statement

"I do not think there is an intention to seek a state of mind, sadness, the soul or the psyche. Instead, I'm busy thinking about the color, the turpentine, the drying. I do not remember having any willingness to reveal any state of mind." Excerpt from "The Perpetual Movement of Francisco Toledo," 2017.
