Sophie Gonzalez Benoit

Bio

Sophie González Benoit is a visual artist whose practice encompasses sculpture and installation. She was born in Venezuela (1975), where she studied architecture at the Central University of Venezuela.
Her life and career have unfolded across several countries, including Canada, France, Argentina, Uruguay and Panama, where she currently resides. She stays engaged with the art world and continually develops her practice through courses, residencies, workshops and studio clinics. Her work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions in Argentina and Uruguay.
González Benoit’s multicultural trajectory deeply informs her artistic vision. She pursues the re-semantization of materials as a critical and poetic exercise, challenging their plasticity, form and capacity to dialogue with space. By intervening in these elements, she seeks to unsettle preconceived perceptions, promoting an open, polyphonic reading that transcends their primary utility.

Statement

My artistic practice revolves around the exploration of transformations and adaptations within the environment—both human and non-human. Through a material investigation that challenges the limits of the object and its potential for re-signification, discarded materials—particularly those originating from industrial and commercial processes—become central to my work. They function as tangible metaphors for the dynamics of production, consumption, and obsolescence. My interest lies in shifting them into the realm of abstraction and visual seduction, questioning their original functionality and subverting material hierarchies.
