Special Project Marina De Caro

Curator: Irene Gelfman

This year’s Special Project is dedicated to artist Marina De Caro and her series Binarios: lenguaje secreto. The series originated in the iconic 1990s as part of a performance-fashion show held at Fundación Banco Patricios, during the Jornadas de Arte Argentino del Siglo XX organized by Jorge López Anaya. Six black-and-white figures moved among the audience in the auditorium. When she was invited to create this performance, de Caro conceived of a sensitive skin using the contrast of black and white, the dot, the line—the basic elements. A woven texture, a form of camouflage that duplicated the skin, our largest organ.

In 2023, Marina reactivated the series through dialogues in which bodies established more flexible, organic relationships. The costumes are now presented folded, their pleats evoking what once took place there—the moments when those doubles came to life.

In Marina De Caro’s work, the body runs through her entire practice: the body as a generator of movement, as a resonant chamber, sensitive to all the senses and even conceived collectively.

This edition of Pinta BAphoto pays tribute to the artist and her work throughout these years.
