Bio
Lobo Velar de Irigoyen (1978, Buenos Aires) began his career as a photographer and image-maker in 1998. He defined his personal style through a continuous search for aesthetic languages based on experimentation and the intervention of his photographs. He gained recognition in the fields of fashion and editorial photography, where he continues to collaborate on various projects. His artistic practice dissolves the distinctions between collage, photography, and painting.
Self-taught in character, Lobo Velar trained as a photographer by studying and working with renowned national and international photographers, and as an art director at the Argentine Association of Advertising Agencies. He has taken part in various courses, workshops, and critique sessions with Facundo de Zuviría, Marcos López, Gabriel Valansi, Laura Batkis, Remo Bianchedi, among others.
He currently lives and works in La Boca, Buenos Aires, and is represented by Tramo in Argentina and Galleria Ipercubo in Milan.
Statement
I think of my work as a playful and abstract attempt to explore the intimacy of everyday life from a state of constant discontent. It seeks to pose and question problems of communication and conflicts of interpretation: desire, the traps of memory, and the passage of time. I use fragments from my personal photographs, choosing the pieces that tell less than most of the story. I draw and paint with different materials that compose the scene, trying to remain flexible with the context and accepting error as a human gesture. My intention is to unsettle the gaze by infusing memory with energy and thus establish a dialogue with a discontented present, where emptiness becomes content and time, rather than freedom, becomes a burden. Perhaps in this way it is possible to redefine roles in favor of a continuous search that helps us interact more meaningfully with ourselves and with nature, and in doing so, find a form of happiness.
