Laura Cuadros

Bio

Laura Cuadros was born in Lima in 1988. She is a self-taught artist specialized in painting and is renowned for her hyperrealist interpretations of the human experience from a symbolic and metaphorical perspective with a somewhat humorous touch. Prior to pursuing a career in art, Laura worked as a fashion designer and was the only South American finalist in the prestigious International Arts of Fashion Competition, 2008 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

Statement

Laura Cuadros' paintings stand out for their hyperrealism and their ability to raise awareness of the issues they portray. Her works present a world of consciousness regarding the various crises the world faces today, initially in a seemingly humorous way until the true message is perceived. Laura's activism is reflected in her approach to current issues such as mental health, illegal mining, human rights, and gender equality. In this particular exhibition her focus is on the impact of consumerism on the environment.
Laura Cuadros' artistic practice revolves around the constant transformation of both nature and human experience. She is a self-taught artist who sees clouds and the sky as a living metaphor for how beauty and ephemerality coexist with realities that often go unnoticed. Through her large-scale paintings, she invites the viewer to question their relationship with the environment and to recognize the role they play in its preservation (or degradation).
For Laura, painting is a means of reconciling herself with the world, especially when the media is saturated with violence and uncertainty.
