Bio
Sophie Baker was born in 1979 in England and currently lives and works in London, United Kingdom. In 2005, she received her Bachelor of Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London, and in 2005, she completed her Master of Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. She has participated in solo exhibitions in London and Oxford including in Copper Beech Gallery (2024), David David Gallery (2013), Art Jericho (2011), Corridor Gallery (2010), and Waterpoint Gallery (2007). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at The Bear, London (2024); Angus-Hughes Gallery, London (2015); Elephant Hotel, London (2014); Kings Bench Gallery, London (2013); and General Hardware Contemporary, Toronto (2012), among others. Alongside her personal art production, Sophie is part of the team of Anish Kapoor studio, the world-renowned British artist, she has been a studio member for over 20 years.
Statement
Sophie Baker's paintings go beyond a contemplative invitation to appreciate the beauty of nature. The artist portrays these elements to explore the contribution, and in turn the conflict that exists between nature and humankind; the deterioration and subsequent restoration that occurs when humans disrupt the natural state of ecosystems. Furthermore, and even more distinctively in her later works, Sophie captures nature in a biographical manner: the flowers, forests, potted plants, and gardens she depicts reflect her memories, thoughts, and emotions during certain moments of her life. Sophie represents the nature that surrounds her in memorable times, some are simple and everyday memories, but others harbor greater emotional complexities; nonetheless, they are all evoked with an extraordinary level of warmth and beauty that is characteristic of the artist's work. Nature is an emotional and nostalgic trigger for Sophie, it takes her back to cherished experiences, to reflections on life, childhood, and motherhood. Sophie's paintings are not mere landscapes and still life’s, they are stories whose essence for longing and reflection is conveyed through her finely thought-out brushstrokes which convey a feeling of an instant suspended in time.
