Cabinet

A section dedicated to solo artist projects, specially selected for their distinctive proposals and presented independently from what galleries exhibit in their booths in the Main Section. These curated projects offer the opportunity to delve deeper into an artist’s work and provide a more focused perspective.

Presented by RE/MAX, the section brings together projects by Oda arte, Herlitzka & Co. and Galería Towpyha.

Towpyha Gallery presents for Cabinet “If I Were Not a Photographer, I Would Be a Musician”, a selection of photographs by Gabriel Rocca curated by art historian Marcela Astudillo.

Gabriel Rocca: Between 1982 and 1989, he photographed some of the most influential figures in Argentine music for the iconic magazines Pelo and Canta Rock. These were also his early years as a photographer, shaped by three decisive moments in the country’s history: the dictatorship, the Falklands War, and the return to democracy. At the intersection of music and history, while rock was creating its own heroes, Rocca was beginning to develop his distinctive gaze. A portraitist of a generation, a creator of idols and mythical figures, his images are now part of our collective memory.

Herlitzka & Co. presents for Cabinet a selection of works by the distinguished Argentine visual artist, poet, writer, and filmmaker Leandro Katz (Argentina, 1938). As a tribute, the presentation highlights Katz’s powerful body of work, which has sustained a profound exploration of nature, language, and words, and their connections with the image. Photography has been a fundamental medium for the artist, through which he has developed a wide range of works, from the creation of poetic lunar alphabets to the documentation and recording of archaeological sites from the pre-Hispanic past in his emblematic Catherwood Project series. Throughout these works, attentive observation of nature consistently emerges as a fertile space that the artist reinterprets through an experimental and conceptual photographic practice. Most recently, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes presented his retrospective exhibition La noche y las palabras. His work is also held in important collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, MALBA, Museo Reina Sofía, MUAC, Museo de Arte de Lima, Blanton Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Pérez Art Museum, and Getty Museum (Los Angeles).

Leandro Katz: (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1938). Argentine artist, writer, and filmmaker known for his films and photographic installations. His work includes long-term projects addressing Latin American subjects and incorporating historical research, anthropology, and the visual arts. He is the author of numerous books of prose, poetry, and artist’s books. He has made fourteen non-narrative and documentary films, as well as three narrative films. His group exhibitions include Encuentros de Pamplona 72: fin de fiesta del arte experimental, Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; Imán-New York, Proa, Buenos Aires; Arrebatos, diagonales y rupturas (curated by Bérénice Reynaud), Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires, 2013; 10.000 Vidas, Gwangju Biennale, Korea, 2010; Fotografía Argentina 1850-2010: Contradicción y continuidad, The Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires (curated by Judy Keller, Idurre Alonso, and Rodrigo Alonso); Naturaleza.
