Serlian Barreto
Bio
Serlian Barreto was born in Cuba and lives and works in the United States. He is a graduate of the San Alejandro Academy of Art in Havana. His work has been exhibited in several galleries in Cuba, at the Havana Biennial, and in institutions in Naples, Italy. Despite his short career, Barreto is a talented emerging artist who approaches each of his works with a perspective that draws on previous stylistic references, much like that of Renaissance artists: notes, sketches, reference clippings, and so on. Most of Barreto's works are in private collections, as well as in the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) in Miami, Florida, USA; the Jorge M. Pérez Collection in Miami, Florida, USA; and El Oficio: Colección Revista de Arte y Literatura in Havana, Cuba.
Statement
My work is organized, above all, around a profound love for painting. Painting is, for me, discourse, language, and medium. It is through painting that I construct a personal universe that arises from my musings, aspirations, fantasies, and also, of course, from a direct dialogue with my circumstances. I am greatly interested in the reconstruction of animals, objects, and organic forms. These elements, in a symbolic way, establish a common thread that connects all my works within a shared horizon, stimulating allusions, associations, and affinities between one piece and another.
