Blanca Rosa Machuca
Bio
I am Blanca Rosa Machuca, born in 1959 in Tucumán. In the Western zodiac, I am a water sign, and in the Chinese zodiac, an earth sign—both elements have marked my path. That’s why I love to sink my hands into the soil without worrying about how dirty they get. What matters is caressing the roots and washing what must be cleansed in order to keep existing.
As a child, my perception of beauty was my first horizon. In adolescence, my game was to discover something new in the landscape each day—something I hadn’t seen before—and to play with vision and symbols.
I graduated as an art teacher from the School of Fine Arts at the National University of Tucumán (UNT) and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the same university’s Faculty of Arts. Throughout my life, I have traveled as a visual artist, experimenting with different forms and materials—researching, discovering, and learning. I don’t worry about defining which discipline my works belong to, since the boundaries between them don’t exist.
Since 2009, I have directed Espacio Casalma in Yerba Buena, where I live, dedicate myself to creation, and work as a teacher.
Statement
My work is essentially a ritual. I connect man, desire, and magic through imagery, in a celebration of timeless art. I identify with folk art, working in silence, without haste, without concern for techniques or academic perspectives. Each symbol carries an ancient image we have forgotten. Learning to see it is the beginning of remembering—becoming aware of who we are. Sewing, painting, assembling, embroidering, drawing—to re-signify fragments of the world. I create through spells, amulets, ex-votos, and objects charged with magic, adding threads, buttons, pins, thorns, feathers, seeds, mirrors, and every element that nurtures the fetish and the diversity of ideas.
