Pinta Foundation supports Laura Castro’s residency at El Espacio 23

Pinta Foundation reaffirms its commitment to fostering the circulation and professional development of Latin American artists by supporting initiatives that promote exchange, research, and professional growth in international contexts.

On this occasion, the foundation supported Dominican artist Laura Castro in undertaking a residency at El Espacio 23 in Miami, United States, by covering the cost of her airfare. This support forms part of Pinta Foundation’s ongoing efforts to facilitate access for Latin American artists to residency programs and educational opportunities that encourage the expansion of their practices and professional networks.

Founded by collector and philanthropist Jorge M. Pérez, El Espacio 23 is a contemporary art center located in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood. Conceived as a platform for artists, curators, and researchers, it develops exhibitions, residencies, and special projects connected to the Pérez Collection, fostering experimentation, research, and dialogue across diverse artistic communities.

Laura Castro’s practice focuses on exploring the relationships between territory, memory, and identity in the Caribbean. Through painting, archival research, and investigative methodologies, she examines how historical narratives have shaped our relationship with the land and proposes alternative ways of engaging with it through direct experience, observation, and memory. In recent years, her work has delved into issues related to the fragmentation of the island of Hispaniola, the traces of modernity on the landscape, and the ways in which territory permeates both collective experience and intimate, embodied dimensions.

The residency at El Espacio 23 provided an opportunity to further expand these lines of inquiry through dialogue with artists, curators, and researchers from diverse backgrounds, strengthening her practice within an international context of exchange and critical reflection.

Through initiatives such as this, Pinta Foundation continues to create meaningful opportunities for the mobility, visibility, and professional development of Latin American artists, expanding spaces for collaboration and exchange within the contemporary cultural ecosystem.
