Fatima Rodrigo is a visual artist. Her practice explores how images participate in the construction of hierarchies, identities, and ideas of modernity in Latin America. She works with references drawn from fashion, mass culture, television, art history, and different visual traditions, displacing and decontextualizing them in order to question their established meanings. In her work, she brings together imaginaries from different periods and geographies, challenging categories such as high and low culture, past and present, tradition and progress. Her practice also addresses the construction of gender identity and the ways in which images not only represent certain ideas, but also shape ways of feeling, thinking, and understanding oneself in the world.
