Susette Kok
Bio
Fourth generation of photographers, Kok was born in the Netherlands in 1967. She began very young learning photography in her father's studio. She has a master’s degree in Communication and International Relations at the University of Amsterdam. Simultaneously, she studies photography and image at the Center for Fine Arts in that city. She works in various advertising agencies in Holland, Singapore, Russia, and the United States. In 2002 she settled in Montevideo, Uruguay. A year later, she chooses to dedicate herself entirely to photography. After working for three years as a freelance photographer for different clients in the areas of fashion, design, and portraits, she decides to dedicate to documentary photography, deepening the social and anthropological elements of her projects.
Statement
Para mí la fotografía es una manera de explorar el mundo, cuestionando nuestra existencia. Siempre hay un contacto directo, participativo con las personas que retrato. Quiero que sean parte del proceso y que entiendan el propósito de cada proyecto. Intento abrir un dialogo hacia un público más amplio y cuestionar en conjunto la importancia de “ver” el otro como parte nuestro, como parte de un sistema que está interconectado. Estoy convencida que algunas duras realidades pueden transformarse fomentando compasión. Es importante mostrar la belleza y el amor, como forma de deshacer estereotipos. La fotografía y las historias son una herramienta que uso para cuestionar la condición humana, como una exploración de la vida.

Esta serie es parte de la comunidad de inmigrantes rusos en Uruguay. Su nombre, 13.288, es el número de kilómetros que separa el pueblo de San Javier, en el interior de Uruguay de Moscú.
