Sergio Fernandez
Bio
He studied architecture in Lima and worked in London practicing it on a human scale, where he emphasized his interest in photography, starting a self-taught training. He presents his first solo show in 2014 at Lucía de la Puente gallery. Since 2012 he actively participates in different individual projects. Among them, the fairs Lima Photo, ArtLima, Scope Miami, ArtBo in Bogotá, Paris Photo, Photo Basel in Switzerland and Positions in Berlin stand out. He has exhibited collectively at the Carlos Caamaño Foto Galería (Lima), the Klaus Steinmetz gallery (San José, Costa Rica), the National Museum of Fine Arts (Santiago), the Marta Traba gallery of the Memorial da América Latina (Sao Paulo) and the Younique Gallery (Zürich). In 2017, he presented his second solo show at the Alianza Francesa gallery in Lima, entitled Mecanismos del Paisaje. Both in 2018 and 2019, he participated in the ArtLima at the "Solo Projects" section, represented by Carlos Caamaño.
Statement
The proposals of his work are structured based on an important presence of landscape and architectural elements, through which he takes a critical look at the concepts of history, identity and territory of Peru. These elements of Peruvian identity build a nuance where its historical and anthropological aesthetic sense of Peru is expanded. In his work, Fernandez complements architecture with photography. While through architecture he builds a rational thought, through photography he generates a more intuitive and reflective discourse. His photography invites the spectator to doubt.
