Jorge Cabieses
Bio
Jorge Cabieses studied Fine Arts at the Corriente Alterna School in Lima and was selected in 2012 and 2014 for the Cisneros Foundation Grants and Commissions Program (CIFO) for emerging artists. His work has been exhibited at the Lima Museum (MALI); at the Casa de América in Madrid and at the Museo de la Nación in Lima. It has also been selected by the curator Cecilia Fajardo Hill for the Sagayo & Pardon Collection of Latin American Art (2014), as well as for the exhibition Ojo Latino Miradas de un continente from the Luciano Benetton Collection (2009), presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art from Santiago de Chile. His works can be found in prestigious art collections such as the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), Eduardo Hochschild, Tanya Capriles and Luciano Benetton.
Statement
The work of Jorge Cabieses takes as its starting point the merging of diverse elements of Peruvian popular culture that the artist fuses and reinterprets in a neo-pop key. With a plastic resolution close to American concretism, Russian constructivism and the Bauhaus, Cabieses constructs the pictorial field as a diagram: a schematic representation of information. Against the tradition of figuration, the artist resorts to a hard geometry far removed from representation. Against a certain tradition of geometric abstraction, the works do not seek to invoke a world of ideal forms detached from the earthly, and rather find references in multiple visual codes. The “aesthetic of the diagram” proposed by the artist entails a commitment to find a form of agreement between very dissimilar concepts of the image (such as icon, shape, symbol, etc.) and its different horizons (figurative, abstract, encrypted, etc. ) to seek to gather its vast power and possibility.
