Book presentation by artist Tola and Arequipa-born poet Carlos Herrera

Art-Literary Tasting

José Tola’s fascinated and ongoing relationship with monsters has undeniable roots in the literary word. His life is filled with beings from his hallucinations and nightmares.

It is only natural that, as these texts by Carlos Herrera began to take the form of a book, there emerged a need to accompany them with images evoking the same universe. And there is no Peruvian artist who has explored this theme more coherently and aesthetically than José Tola.

From the fuzzy, unsettling entities of his early period to the unhinged, colorful, and excessive characters of his later works, Tola’s art is a constant manifesto for the artistic value of the monstrous. Ergo, considering that art is possibly the most distinctive trait of humanity—as the creation of a symbolic universe—Tola reveals to us how human the monster is. And vice versa.
