Time Sensitive

As part of PINTA Miami's curatorial projects this year, curator Jesús Fuenmayor will present a series of artistic proposals that explore the incorporation of time in the work of art, focusing on works that are sensitive to the relation between the temporal and the spatial. The idea is to bring together a group of works by prominent artists from Ibero-America (Latin America, Spain and Portugal); created by well-established artists as well as by younger generations, but all of whom take up the question of time, one of the most defining elements in contemporary art’s reception. Here, the incorporation of time in the artwork is essential since it functions as a trigger that makes the fair’s public sensitive to its perceptual conditions and the paradoxes that govern this context.
The selection of artists also aims to question reductive geopolitical distinctions that project an a priori identity onto art. For this reason, the curator privileges artists who have been working, or have worked, in dialogic spaces; that is, between precise geographic boundaries and within the mobility of the global contemporary understood in its best sense.
Jesús Fuenmayor
Jesús Fuenmayor is a curator with more than thirty years of experience in the organization of exhibitions, consulting on collections, as well as serving as editor for art publications.
From 2012 to 2015, he was Director and Curator at CIFO Art Foundation, Miami, and from 2005 to 2011, Director and Curator at Periférico Caracas, Venezuela. In 2004 he was curator at the Museo Alejandro Otero, and in the years 1996-1998 he worked as the museologist at the Dirección General Sectorial de Museos, Consejo Nacional de la Cultura in Caracas.
He has organized curatorial seminars at various venues, including the Fundación Mercantil, and taught at the Universidad José María Vargas, Faculty of Architecture, School of Graphic Design in Caracas. His recent exhibitions include an exhibition on Gego (2015); the first American retrospective of Eugenio Espinoza at the Perez Art Museum, Miami (2015); “Impulse, Reason, Sense, Conflict” at CIFO Art Foundation (2014 – 2015); in addition to working as a curatorial consultant for the award-wining “Permission to be Global” at the Museum of Fine Arts de Boston (2014). He has curated many exhibitions on individual artists, among them, Stan Douglas, Guillermo Kuitca, Sergio Vega, Meyer Vaisman, Antoni Muntadas, Carla Arocha and Stephane Schraenen. He has also contributed to various magazines such as Art Nexus, Trans, Atlántica, Arte al Día and Polyester, for which he served on the editorial board.
