Lenora de Barros

Between years 1993 and 1996, Lenora de Barros concieved a weekly column called “... Umas”. In this space works and ideas have been created, and these would become autonomous video and photo performances in the following years. After exhibiting 13 of these columns in a showcase at the 11th edition of the Lyon Biennial in 2011, and holding the exhibition “Umas ..” at Galeria Pivô, in Sao Paulo, 2013, Lenora is currently finalizing a collection of these columns in a unique version with Familia Editions.

Checkers
In Checkers, the artist Lenora de Barros plays checkers with herself, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other side of the board. Such movement creates an infinite game with no winner or loser. The performance is a derivation from her column "... Umas", a space for experimentation that gave rise to several video and photo performance works in the following years.

Some and Others
In this vocal performance, Lenora de Barros reads a few texts of her column “…Umas e Outras” [Some and Others] It is a work that operates the verbivocovisual, with an eye on the materiality of the signs in all their angles, like semantic spectra, oralization, and visual aspects, with special attention to graphical structure.

Lenora de Barros
São Paulo - SP, 1953
Visual artist and poet, Lenora de Barros graduated in Linguistics from the University of São Paulo (USP) and started her artistic career in the 1970s. The first works created by Lenora can be placed in the field of "visual poetry" in dialogue with the concrete poetry movement of the 1950s. Words and images were her first materials.
In 1983, LB published the book Onde se vê [Where one sees], a set of rather unusual “poems”: some of them even dispensing with the use of words, being constructed as photographic sequences where the artist herself acted out different characters in performance acts. This book already announced Lenora's transit to the field of visual arts. Since then, the artist has been constructing a work marked by the use of diversified media: video, performance, photography, sound installation and the creation of objects.
Her work is included in collections in Brazil and several other countries, among them the Hammer Museum (CA, USA), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Spain), Daros Latinamerica Collection (Switzerland), Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM) and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. Among the most important exhibitions she participated are the collective and individuals held at the Mexic-Art Museum (Austin, USA, 2002); 11th Lyon Biennale, (France, 2011); ISSOÉOSSODISSO at Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade (São Paulo, 2016); Migros Museum (Zurich, Switzerland, 2015); the 4th Thessaloniki Biennial of Contemporary Art (Greece, 2013); 17th, 24th and 30th International Biennial of São Paulo.
