Manolo Valdes
Bio
The painter and sculptor Manolo Valdés was born in Valencia in 1942. At the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, he met Rafael Solbes and Juan Toledo and founded Equipo Crónica in 1964. The group is the most important movement of Pop Art in Spain, and it is characterized by its images in series and by its capture of elements taken from the history of art. After and the group's dissolution, Manolo Valdés moved to New York. His work is part of the most important collections and museums in the world.
Statement
Declaring himself “a consumer of art and its history,” Manolo Valdés produces paintings, prints, and sculptures that explore history and contemporary culture. Trained as a painter, Valdés grew up influenced by the works of Spanish masters and later by Pop Art. References to Spain abound in his work, in portraits resembling the royals, sculptures recalling Don Quixote, or in the recurring, semi-abstracted figure of the Infanta from Velazquez’s Las Meninas.
