Hélio Oiticica

Bio

Born in Rio de Janeiro, 1937. Oiticica began his career studying with Ivan Serpa at the MAM-Rio. In 1955, he joined the Grupo Frente with his constructive artworks. Later, became a member of the Neo-Concrete Movement, taking part in exhibitions held in Rio, São Paulo, and Salvador. In 1970, took part in the Information exhibition organized by the New York MoMA, receiving then a scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation. Oiticica died in 1980.

Statement

Oiticica's work is characterized by strong experimentalism and inventiveness in the constant search for merging art and life. His experiments, which presuppose active participation of the public, are largely accompanied by theoretical elaborations, with the presence of texts, comments, and poems.
