Pedro Ruiz

Bio

Pedro Ruiz (Bogotá, 1957) began his studies in architecture and music at Colombia’s National University in 1975, later attending the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (1979-1983). During this period, he trained under Stanley William Hayter at “Atelier 17,” specializing in engraving techniques. Upon returning to Colombia, Ruiz worked as an illustrator and art director before turning exclusively to the visual arts, earning an Honorable Mention at the National Artists’ Salon in 1988. His major works—*Living Natures*, *The Natural Library*, *Hi8*, *Displacements*, *Love Is In The Air*, and *Light Colombians*—delve into themes of nature and society. His acclaimed series *GOLD, Spirit and Nature of a Territory* continues to represent Colombia worldwide, accompanied by his educational initiative, *VITAL GOLD*, which invites Colombians to reconnect with their roots. Recognized internationally, Ruiz was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by France and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Colombia.

Statement

Pedro Ruiz explores the connection between humanity and nature from a global perspective, emphasizing the urgent need for environmental conservation. In his series *GOLD, Spirit and Nature of a Territory*, he uses gold as a metaphor for natural resources—essential yet vulnerable, facing increasing threats. Through vibrant landscapes and poetic scenes, Ruiz invites reflection on biodiversity preservation and respect for the natural world, celebrating not only Colombia’s wealth but the importance of protecting ecosystems worldwide. His work seeks to awaken a universal consciousness, encouraging viewers to value and safeguard the resources that sustain life on our planet.
