Bio
Sérgio Fernandes (1985), lives and works in Lisbon.
He was an artist-in-residence at Centro de Arte Oliva (São João da Madeira, Portugal) in 2021 and 2022 and at PIVÔ Arte e Pesquisa (São Paulo, Brazil) in 2016. He also attended other residencies over the past years including: Córtex Frontal (2020, Arraiolos, Portugal); Inter.Meada Artistic Residencies (2017, Alvito, Portugal) and Royal Blue nº224. Carris Museum (2014, Lisbon, Portugal). Statement
Sérgio Fernandes' work is based on a reflection about time. A time that lives in the thin, dark and unknown space in between death and life. His work exists in the void. It floats around conditions experienced or to be experienced about which there is no memory. His paintings suggest something that is beyond them, beyond the image, something that is not visible. Fernandes often says that: “in the end, my paintings are the proof that I am empty and I have not a single idea. I am just a wanderer.” Sérgio Fernandes’ main body of work focuses on oil on large scale canvases, which is frequently complemented with watercolour, drawing and sculpture.
