Statement
I use documentary photography as the raw material for a process of visual dismantling and reassembly. I begin with photographic surveys carried out along the roads and through the small towns of the Calchaquí Valleys—the place where I was born and raised—documenting centuries-old adobe structures. Following their documentation, many of these structures were demolished, while others were plastered over, concealing the adobe beneath. Those that remain are still there, exposed to the slow erosion of wind and rain and to abandonment. In my work, I reconstruct them—through digital montage—into structures in which adobe and stone defy gravity. Beyond the valuable documentation of an architectural and cultural heritage, I am also interested in alluding to and opening up the possibility of other “constructions” of meaning.
