Bio
Elvira Amor (Madrid, 1982) holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Cuenca, 2003-2009). She has lived and studied in Madrid, Buenos Aires (Argentina), Puebla (Mexico), Brussels (Belgium), and Yogyakarta (Indonesia), exhibiting her work in each of these cities and undertaking various projects.
Her recent solo exhibitions include "Verde llano, rosa oblicuo" (CAB Centro de Arte de Burgos 2022), "Sendas Selvas" (Galería Moisés Pérez de Albéniz, Madrid 2021), "Formas de oír" (Alimentación 30, Madrid 2020), and "Salmón ladrillo coral" (García Galeria, Madrid, 2018).
She has also participated in several group exhibitions, such as "Roma, a portrait" (Pallazo delle Esposizioni, Rome, Italy 2023), "Processi 150" (Real Academia de España en Roma, Italy, 2023), "La distancia entre A y B" curated by Bea Espejo at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid (2023), "Artistas en producción" (Estudio 50, La Habana 2022), and "Pintura Renovación Permanente" curated by Mariano Navarro (Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid 2021).
Elvira has received various awards and grants, including the Academy of Spain in Rome Fellowship for 2022-2023, Visual Arts Creation Grant from VEGAP in 2017, and the Artistic Production Prize in 2015 from the Banco Santander Foundation-Open Studio.
She has been selected for the JAI Institute of Artistic Practices program (Tabakalera, Artium, Museo Oteiza, San Sebastián 2022) and has participated in residencies such as Fundación Bilbao Arte (Bilbao, 2021), Villavergerie (Huesca, 2020), Kankabal 2017 (Noox Galeria, Yucatán, Mexico), Residencia Zona Seis (Galeria Luis Adelantado, Mexico 2016), and Mundo Dios 2012 (Mar del Plata, Argentina).
Statement
Elvira Amor's pictorial work immerses us in pure abstraction: form and color, unfinished shapes that extend beyond the canvas boundaries, becoming almost tangible objects. Her colors are genuine, personal, and meticulously chosen. Her drawing carries a strong gestural quality, closely connected to bodily expression, aiming to create its own vocabulary and syntax through the elements composing the artwork.
The curved and imperfect forms in her paintings clash with the canvas's straight lines, seemingly unable to contain the universe created by the artist. They expand, leaving the viewer's imagination to envision their continuation, revealing the brushstrokes and the journey undertaken as part of the process. Despite the smooth and polished surfaces found in her work, Amor doesn't conceal anything.
In both her paintings and sculptures, Amor explores three-dimensionality. Her sculptures are extensions of her pictorial work, constructed with planes of color that generate geometric forms through straight and curved lines. She consistently plays with the viewer's perspective, inviting us to explore her art from different angles.
