Statement

Although he has also explored landscape extensively as part of his engagement with the local area, Silva Meinel's work has predominantly focused on portraiture, a genre he has developed with rare depth and consistency. In constructing an integrated perspective on the people and the spaces they inhabit, he has built an extensive body of work that bridges the local and the universal. Drawing inspiration from the tradition of village and street photographers in the southern Andes, Silva Meinel successfully blends this heritage with the language of 20^(th)-century contemporary art. The result is a unique body of work that bridges the local and the universal.
Over the course of more than five decades, he has travelled extensively throughout Peru, documenting its cultural diversity and constructing a visual narrative that redefines how we view the country and its inhabitants. In his images, the portrait transcends mere documentation to become an encounter: a space for recognition and the exchange of gazes and identities.
