Statement
For Gómez, art provides a space in which to observe human behaviour. Actions, rituals and habits manifest in particular ways that are repeated in order to establish a sense of belonging to a group of people. These are not exceptional expressions, but rather familiar and everyday occurrences that form part of the world in which I live and operate.
Images, phrases, objects, bodily movements and thoughts are part of a vast universe within each of us that functions as instructions or commands to put ideas into action. For example, the ideas of womanhood, manhood, family, knowledge and art. Reproducing these forms repeatedly establishes a recognisable pattern.
Using the representational technique best suited to each project — drawing, painting, performance or photography — Gomez appropriates the form and presents a selection. The artistic process of reproducing and assembling a group allows him to explore its content and how it communicates.
His work serves as a tool for creating distance from the everyday manner in which we receive and reproduce ideas. At the same time, he seeks to transform the work into an experience through which to carry out an 'update', realigning oneself with the mandate received in real time.
