Gysel Fernandini

Bio

Gysel Fernandini was born in 1972 in Lima, Peru. She studied architecture and urban planning at Ricardo Palma University and worked professionally as an architect and interior designer for 20 years in Lima and Miami. She currently lives and works in Lima, Peru. Her passion for architecture began in childhood, accompanying her mother to her workshop, where she worked as an interior decorator. There, she and her brother would play with scrap wood and fabrics. She grew up surrounded by blueprints and colonial objects, which her mother collected and transformed into furniture for their home. The artist states that this process of reinventing antique objects into furniture pieces is reflected in her collage work, where she transforms her photographs by incorporating new angles and materials.

Statement

"FRAGMENTS OF MEMORY." This is how I perceive my 3D photos, where I try to bring you closer to those memories—images that remain in our memory from some life experience, whether distant or recent. That memory always fades with time, becoming abstract, with particular details, and as a result, fragments remain, which your memory accesses each time you travel through time, and which for each person has a particular and personal meaning.
"Memory and self: And I arrive at the fields and vast enclosures of memory, where the treasures of countless images taken by the senses lie. There, too, I find myself. And I remember myself and what I did, when and where, and how I was affected when I did it. (...) And from there comes the capacity to think, to construct images of the past and foresee the future."
