Roberto Matta

Bio

Roberto Matta (Santiago, 1911 - Civitavecchia, 2002) was a Chilean painter and architect, world reference of surrealism and key piece of abstract expressionism. His work is characterized by cosmic landscapes, fluid forms and a deep exploration of the human mind, creating what he called "psychological morphologies" or the "sersaje".

Statement

Roberto Matta was characterized by the creation of "ser-sajes" (landscapes of being), exploring the unconscious, the fourth dimension and physics through a pictorial automatism. As the last great surrealist, his work eliminated the traditional perspective, creating immersive and chaotic spaces that sought to make visible the invisible and the human consciousness.
