Consuelo Walker
Bio
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, completed an academic exchange at Universidade do Porto (2008), and earned a Master’s in Cultural Management from Universidad de Chile (2009). Her artistic practice unfolds within textile art, through which she explores notions of accumulation and excess. She has held five solo exhibitions, including Fragmentos de un tiempo sentido (Galería Artespacio, 2025) and Tangibly Longing (The Projecto Gallery, Austin, 2024). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Chile at the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), and the Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI). In 2017 she received the Best Artistic Project Award from Revista ED, and in 2018 the “Business for Art – Artmajeur” recognition from the Arte Laguna Prize, Venice. She took part in the Contemporary Textile Art Biennial in Madrid (2019), Pinta Miami (2023), and Pinta Parc Peru (2024), and represented Chile at Contextile, Portugal (2024).
Statement
My work originates in the domestic sphere, in practices such as sewing and embroidery, traditionally tied to the feminine realm. I am drawn to manipulating simple, everyday objects linked to these techniques. These objects, with their nostalgic charm, are typically present in any household sewing kit and are reminiscent of common domestic activities. Through processes of accumulation and excess, these elements gain new meaning. The importance no longer lies in the true nature of the element, but in the interpretation of its accumulation and the reinvention of its exposure to the everyday world. Through the eye of the spectator, varied interpretations are stimulated on a visual and sensory level.
