Uýra | Renan Teles

Statement

Working mainly with performance and photoperformance, as well as art education, Uýra uses her own body as a support to tell stories of the encounter and difference between the forest and the city, stitched together by scientific and ancestral knowledge. The multiple natures of worlds, their origins and impacts as a socio-cultural and political imaginary, the disappearance and resurgence of life and the indigenous diaspora are some of her research and production interests.
___
Renan Teles is an Afro-Indigenous multimedia artist of Xacriabá ancestry, living in Itaquera, in the eastern part of São Paulo. His research uses photography as a starting point, from which he critically investigates the historical and symbolic layers of the representation of the black and Afro-Indigenous body, racialized eroticism and the social construction of the villainization of black men. Within the variety of solutions and media that interest him, such as painting, photography, installation and textile objects, his works seem to respond with intricate reasoning. Each of his series carries recurring solutions that allow a fluid transition between different media, where the medium also integrates the work as a conceptual unfolding. Renan is a member and one of the founders of Vilanismo, a brotherhood and art collective formed by black men from the outskirts who work with survival strategies, aesthetic experimentation and narrative dispute in the contemporary art circuit.
