Alejandro Vega
Bio
(Caracas, 1979). Architect and plastic artist. He has received recognition, awards and publications for his work as an architect (2004-2012) and as a professor of architecture, design and plastic arts at the Simón Bolívar University, Caracas (2007-2014). In 2013, he won first place for the conceptual development and execution of three urban-scale sculptures to be placed in the city of Caracas. In 2014 he moved to Barcelona, Spain from where he established a workshop to continue his sculptural work. In 2017 he participated in Carré Latin with an urban scale sculpture in Paris. His main theme in his sculptures is the absence of volume, he simulates two-dimensional objects that escape into our three-dimensional physical world, his sculptures arise from the intersection of planes in space, arranged in simple operations of symmetry, parallelism and perpendicularity . He currently lives and works in Barcelona, Spain.
Statement
When Kandinsky wrote the book Point and line on the plane, the author defined the plane as: "... the material surface called to receive the content of the work." It gives it the diminutive of PB (base plane) and delimits it on its sides with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. He examines the composition on the plane, but does not examine it as a compositional element in itself. At no time is the use of the plane considered as an element capable of being manipulated with the same freedom with which we use the point and the line.
My work focuses on the manipulation of the plane as a compositional element, I grant it characteristics free of condemnation to the rectangularity of its shape and I use its ability to be replicated to generate multiple interactions in space, thus generating sculptural compositions that claim the use of the plane beyond its function as mere support.
