Virginia Gauna Torres
Bio
Virginia Gauna Torres is an architect, photographer, and visual artist. She also worked as an architecture and design journalist for the newspaper Clarín, where she was involved in writing and content production. Her photographs are predominantly abstract and geometric, resulting from the deconstruction and reconstruction of iconic architecture.
On this occasion, Gauna Torres investigates nature through abstraction, exploring its forms, materiality, and the interplay of light and shadow. Through these elements, she shifts forms away from their recognizable appearance to construct new visual relationships and possibilities of meaning.
In her most recent research, she expands her practice through experimental photographic processes, exploring the materiality and transformation of the image. The traces, variations, and accidents inherent to these processes are incorporated into the work, opening up new possibilities within her photographic practice.
Statement
Cápsula
The Cápsula project explores the contemporary use of historical systems of photographic production and reproduction, incorporating current tools such as the generation of digital negatives. Rather than simply recovering historical techniques, it seeks to understand and incorporate their material, technical, and temporal specificities into contemporary artistic practice, investigating how they shape the materiality, singularity, and circulation of the image in the present.
Cápsula brings together works produced through historical photographic processes, such as albumen printing and kallitypes. In 2025, ten artists from Studio Vivian Galban specialized in these historical processes in New York, alongside research conducted in historical archives.
Throughout 2026, this research continued and deepened at Studio Vivian Galban in Buenos Aires, together with specialists, expanding the experimentation around these processes and their possibilities within contemporary photographic practice.
