Humberto Rivas
Bio
(Buenos Aires, 1937 – Barcelona, 2009)
From the outset, he focused on creative photography, viewing it as an art form and distancing himself from documentary work. He was renowned as a portraitist and landscape photographer for his handling of light and technical perfection. Between 1961 and 1969, he headed the Photography Department at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires, during which time he became closely involved with the city’s cultural scene. In 1976, he emigrated to Spain. From then on, he pursued his photographic work on both sides of the Atlantic. He taught at universities and institutions in Argentina, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. Throughout his life, he received numerous awards for his photographic work, notably the City of Barcelona Prize for the Visual Arts in 1997; the National Photography Prize awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1997; and the Konex Prize for his career as a photographer in 2012.
