Statement
Straddling several disciplines such as painting, collage, and installation—where he combines diverse methodologies and visual solutions across media and formats—Ubay Murillo (Tenerife, 1978) explores the image we have—and project—of the contemporary body after the economic crisis. His work also reflects critically on the very disciplines he employs.
This approach is enriched by research into how the images produced by the avant-garde in their creation of a new social and physical body permeated the collective imagination of consumer capitalism, shaping the body we now both inhabit and imagine.
A body dismembered, stretched, and altered to impossible limits—battered and used as a support for a culture of capital and consumption. These consumed images reveal how the utopian world envisioned by early 20th-century artists may have become a dystopia in our present and near future.
