Throughout her career, Colombian artist Ruby Rumié has maintained a persistent engagement with portraiture, adapting it to each project’s concept and experimenting with diverse media. In the 1990s, she produced detailed drawings and paintings of faces, capturing emotional states and personality, often portraying people of humble origins from Cartagena and other Colombian Caribbean cities. Later, she expanded into photography, using portraiture to explore memory, identity, and social narratives with renewed relevance under her attentive gaze.
Statement
Ruby Rumié’s work spans painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation, addressing psychology, social injustice, and the artist’s role in society. Inspired by Cartagena, Colombia, she began with hyper-realistic portraits of its native people and later focused on social and territorial heritage, creating politically engaged projects that reflect both personal and collective experiences.
