Sophia Vari
Bio
Born in Greece, Sophia Vari moved to Paris to study painting at the École des Beaux-Arts. Her early work reflects academic rigor alongside diverse influences, from Baroque to Cycladic art. Over time, geometric lines inspired by Cubism and pre-Columbian art inform her evolving style. In the 1970s, she began sculpting figuratively, moving in the 1980s toward humanized abstraction with flatter shapes. The 1990s saw her first monumental sculptures, where patina and contrasting colors enhanced sensuality and expressiveness. Vari works in bronze, marble, silver, oil, charcoal, watercolor, collage, bas-reliefs, and “wearable sculpture,” consistently combining geometric precision with organic curves. Her art bridges tradition and innovation, balancing formal discipline with a rich, expressive sensibility.
