Irene Kopelmann

Bio

Irene Kopelman (Córdoba, Argentina, 1974) lives and works between Amsterdam and Argentina. Her practice emerges from an ongoing dialogue with scientists, natural history collections, and diverse ecological environments, ranging from glaciers and oceans to research laboratories. Over the past decade she has participated in field expeditions and residencies at institutions such as the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Netherlands) and Laurenz Haus (Basel). Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at MAMAC, Nice; Kunsthalle Lissabon; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich; LABOR, Mexico City; and MAC Panamá, among other venues. She has also taken part in international group projects and biennials including the Berlin Biennale and SITE Santa Fe. Through drawings, paintings, texts, and installations, Kopelman develops systems of representation that explore fragile ecosystems and the production of knowledge about nature.

Statement

Irene Kopelman’s practice unfolds between art and science. Using drawing as a tool of observation, she develops models that do not aim to organize the world but to approach it. Her work emerges from direct encounters with landscapes and ecological processes and their translation into contexts of research and exhibition. Her images operate as forms of embodied knowledge: sensitive records where repetition and difference reveal the instability of all classification.
