Andrea Guedella
Bio
I am an artist who works deeply with her emotions in order to navigate reality. The medium I work with most is the visual. Digital photography and video are ideal companions that adapt to my practice and personality. My work generally explores and investigates systems of representation of the subject in contemporary society. Often through conceptual self-portraiture (perhaps inheriting from artists I admire, such as Claude Cahun and Cindy Sherman), I use humor as a rhetorical device to critique archetypes of femininity, established conventions, possible gender identities, and freedom. There is always another possible version in my work, a transformation of what has been established, opening up the possibility of a new way of seeing, thinking, feeling, or existing. My work is shaped by the accumulation of experiences and knowledge—from music and travel to pop art, my background in advertising, fashion, the media, and more. I always work from desire: to create in order to believe.
Statement
"The unexpected death of a very young member of the family opens up, through images, a sensitive and everyday universe in which the artist finds a way to move through such profound grief and pain.
Accidental death undoubtedly leaves a deep mark. And it is from there that my gaze began to transform profoundly.
I began to perceive the presence and, at the same time, the absence of life in beings and creatures that, also by accident, appeared in my days: little birds, rodents, butterflies, fish…
My process was to handle them delicately and respectfully at the moment of our encounter. To compose with what was there, with the available light, without forcing anything; to create, through simplicity, a posthumous image. My way of paying tribute.
And that is where everything comes to an end: when I feel that I can transform the horror of death into beauty.
For the love of those I have lost."
