Sebastián Mignola

Bio

Sebastián Mignola (b. 1975, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Italian-Argentine contemporary photographer based in New York. He works in the street, observing the human dynamism that emerges within large cities. His practice explores tensions between order and disorder, beauty and abrasion, harmony and friction. In his images, solitude and vulnerability are not dramatic gestures but persistent conditions that reveal the fragility of human presence within the urban environment. Having lived in Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Turin, São Paulo, Mexico City, Miami, and New York, his perspective is shaped by displacement and belonging. His work emerges from this accumulated urban experience, where identity is constructed between movement and permanence. Before dedicating himself fully to photography, he worked as a professional basketball referee for twenty-seven years across four countries. This training in observation, distance, and positioning continues to inform his visual language. He studied at the Miami Institute of Photography and is currently pursuing the One-Year Certificate Program in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at the International Center of Photography in New York, Class of 2026–27. He further developed his practice through mentorship with Jorge Andrés Castillo and Gabriela Gamboa in Miami, Ana Sánchez Zinny in Buenos Aires, and Loredana De Pace in Italy. Influenced by Abbas Attar, Garry Winogrand, and Todd Hido, his work shares with these photographers a careful observation of public space and urban complexity, while emphasizing vulnerability and intimacy within environments defined by speed and density. He presented his work in the solo exhibition Quiet Cities – Moments of Chaotic Stillness at Loupe Studio (New York City, 2025), and participated with AC Latin Art Gallery in the following fairs: Photo London 2025 at Somerset House (London); Art on Paper New York 2025 at Pier 36 (New York City); Photo London 2026 at The National Hall Olympia (London, UK); Photo Basel 2026 (Basel, Switzerland); and solo exhibition Pinta BAphoto 2026 (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Statement

"Fluorescente explores places that, through their light, darkness, physical character, or atmosphere, create a strong sense of attraction in me. The project began in New York and gradually expanded to other cities I traveled through, creating a visual dialogue between different places and cultures. A closed house in a neighborhood, a business still open at night, a wooden bar, an empty street corner, or a restaurant covered in snow under the night lights shift from ordinary places into uncertain settings. I work in the streets, observing and searching for that moment when a place stops being simply a place and takes on a presence strong enough to draw us into its own symbolic world. My images do not suggest a single meaning. I like to imagine that a new version of them is created with every viewing."
